“What should I wear for my wedding? A tuxedo or a Formal suit? I seriously don’t even know the diff

Updated: Jun 14, 2021

The primary physical difference between a tuxedo and a suit is the presence of satin fabric over the lapel. Generally Tux has a satin facing on the lapels, buttons, pocket trim, and a satin side stripe down the leg of the trousers. Formal suits don’t don’t have any satin fabric over the lapel.

When it comes to the accessories, tuxedos are typically worn with bow ties and a vest or cummerbund, while suits are usually worn with a long tie which matches the size of the lapel, alone or with a matching vest. Doesn’t mean you can’t wear a bow tie with a suit or a long tie with a tuxedo. You definitely can. It’s just that the other way around mentioned is more common and a traditional approach. Of course there are exceptions to every rule.

Now, the big question regarding you wearing a formal suit or a tuxedo for your wedding, that has less to do with your physical appearance and more to do with the different messages that a tuxedo and a formal suit gives. Sharing my thoughts on the same:

Wedding is once in a lifetime opportunity and one needs to be dressed as per the occasion. You definitely have a choice on what to wear and what not. You can be dressed with a formal suit with a tie and look one amongst many who come dressed for your wedding. And the perks of the suit will be to wear this suit for many of the future formal work appearances too.

However for your wedding, you definitely want to wear something that makes you look different and at the same time be yourself and set’s you apart. That’s exactly where a tuxedo comes in as a preferred choice for a Wedding Occassion.

The point of dressing up for your wedding isn’t simply to look your best. That’s a big part of it, but it’s also to commemorate your marriage in an ensemble that’s designed for that very purpose. Your wedding day is a special day and it deserves a special dress code.

A suit says that you’re a very well put together, competent, dashing, and productive member of society. That’s why they’re great for the work place and less formal social functions. But a tuxedo says more than that. A tuxedo says “I have come to share this moment with you. I would look out of place anywhere but here. There’s nowhere else I’d rather be.”

Not to mention that, when done correctly, you’ll never look better than you do in a well made, nicely fit tuxedo.
